The annual meeting of the Au Sable North Branch Area Foundation will take place Saturday, September 14, 2019, 10:00 a.m., at the Lovells Township Hall.
This year we will have a special guest speaker: Professor Mark Luttenton, from Grand Valley State University. He is the Associate Dean of the GVSU Graduate School and is a Professor of Biology and Associate Research Scientist in the Annis Water Resources Institute. He has conducted research on native and invasive plants, protozoans, invertebrates, and fish including the ecology of stream dwelling trout, trout diseases, and stream community bioenergetics. He served as an expert witness for the Anglers of the Au Sable in the Hatchery litigation.
We have asked him to speak about the request for him to do a two year study to better understand the extent of the sand covering gravel and its adverse effect on critical insect production and trout spawning activity. The sand load and its locations may be contributing to the decline of trout population in our North Branch.
The ASNBF Board is considering a substantial investment in this study, so this will be an important opportunity to learn more about it.
